A Cache hidden along the Mackerel Forest Track
The Mackerel Forest Track makes up part of Te Araroa The Long walkway
This track is not for the beginner, Parts are not well formed (but is clearly marked), It has several muddy spots and involves 2 unbridged river crossings so do not attempt after rain!
Unfortunatlly the area has recentlly been logged but there is a small oasis where I stopped for some lunch and decided to place a cache.
Make sure you have good footware, Track in places is uneven and has some short steep sections, River crossings are no more than knee deep and with some thought can be made without getting your feet wet - but be prepared! If it has rained recently the dry path may not be dry!
Best to start at the North end, South end has very limited parking and isnt the easiest place to get in/out of due to location.
North end starts from Mackerel Rd, Which leaves from Ngunguru Ford Rd (approx. opposite # 291)
South end starts from Pataua North Rd, Its very hard to spot and has very limited parking (one car is the limit) S 35 40.330 E174 26.666
