Saint Patrick was born Maewyn Succat a Roman Britain-born Christian missionary. When he was about sixteen he was captured by Irish raiders and taken from his native Wales as a slave to Ireland, where he lived for six years before escaping and returning to his own family. After entering the church, he later returned to Ireland as a missionary in the north and west of the island, but little is known about the places where he worked and no link can be made between Patrick and any church. Saint Patrick is most known for driving the snakes from Ireland. It is true there are no snakes in Ireland. As in many old pagan religions, serpent symbols were common and often worshiped. Driving the snakes from Ireland was probably symbolic of putting an end to that pagan practice. While he was not the first to bring christianity to Ireland, it is Patrick who is said to have encountered the Druids at Tara and abolished their pagan rites. The story holds that he converted the warrior chiefs and princes, baptizing them and thousands of their subjects in the "Holy Wells" that still bear this name. By the eighth century he had become the patron saint of Ireland.
He is believed to have died in Ireland on March 17, around 460 A.D.
In Ireland with the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.
Pittsburgh's St. Patrick's Day Parade, first held on March 17, 1869, is among the five largest in the country. Pittsburgh is second, only behind New York City. 250,000 will pack the city streets to celebrate.
The annual Pittsburgh St. Patrick's Day parade is held each year on the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day.
Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania claim a strong Irish heritage, dating back to the 18th century. The region's first settlers hailed from Scotland and Ireland, most putting down roots in the area as farmers and tradesman. These Scotch-Irish were primarily young, rebellious Presbyterians who played a large part in the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794.
In the early 1800's, Irish Catholics began to cross the Alleghenies and settle in Pittsburgh. In 1808, these immigrants built St. Patricks Catholic Church in the Strip District and settled the bustling downtown business district.
During 1890, more Irish immigrants poured into Western Pennsylvania, settling primarily at the Point in downtown Pittsburgh. An entire community of Irish sprung up around the old Fort Pitt Blockhouse, calling themselves "Little Ireland." Other Irish communities grew in the South Side, Strip District, North Side, Oakland and Lawrenceville.
As you can tell from the name and history lesson, this cache is an IRISH themed cache. We are asking that if you visit the cache, you have an Irish trade item or atleast something green to trade.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU CLOSE IT ALL THE WAY….
The recommended parking spot is on Commerical Avenue, near the Irish Centre. This is really the only safe place to park. I would not try this from the housing plan from above. It would be a hard climb down.
