Colonial Hills Bowling Alley / JC Snowkist / Colonial Inn / 222 Adult Shop
My wife and I grew up in the Berks County and have very fond memories of extinct sites around the county. This is the sixth in a series of traditional caches that might bring back fond memories of long gone sites around our county. Many of us have passed these locations from the past with little regard to the lost local commercial history.
I only visited the Colonial Hills Bowling alley a few times to bowl. As I got older, it became the place to have birthday parties and to play wally-ball. Then as the fitness craze took over, it was a location to work out and then hang out at the bar.
Down the road towards Shillington was the 222 Adult Shop and across the street was the KC Snowkist and Colonial Inn. When my wife and I lived on Old Lancaster Pike after we were first married, I would stop at the Snowkist on the way home to pick up chocolate shakes with peanut butter syrup added to them – WOW they were good.
Across the street from Colonial Hills was a Redner’s Quick Mart and a Snapper Lawnmower dealer. Both of these were demolished along with all the other places mentioned as the Route 222 project used eminent domain to improve the highway. One benefit of the road construction was a brief mineral collecting period that produced nice black garnets.
Colonial Hills expanded to become CBH Sports, Inc. They purchased and then relocated to the Berks Lanes Bowling Alley location. Now their realm of locations includes Colonial Fitness, Colonial Sports and Flying Hills Fitness.
