Geocache Description:

The Martin Bridge has stood for nearly 70 years, so it deserves a cache!

This historic icon is the first infrastructure seen when entering Taree from the south. The bridge doesn't see as much traffic anymore, as it is no longer a part of the Pacific Highway. The bridge is an 11 span steel and concrete bridge covering 462 meters. It was renamed after L.O Martin - Minister for Works and Local Government at the time of construction. The final cost was 97,000 pounds. The bridge replaced punts at Taree and Tinonee. It originally had a lifting span with two concrete counter balances for larger boats to travel upstream to Wingham (see if you can spot where they used to stand). It represented a major change in road transport and the transition from river to road. It is listed on the Greater Taree Local Environmental Plan 1995 as an item of local significance.

The total walking distance is about 1km return to your car, but can be driven to if need be. Please be careful of traffic as the bridge can be very busy at times. At no time should you have to cross the road to reach the cache. There is no pedestrian crossing at the lights, I recommend walking under the bridge then taking the ramp up to the footpath.

This is a Multi-cache and you will need to get the year the bridge was opened, it is located at the initial co-ordinates on a plaque. If the year is ABCD, add the digits of AB to the decimal minutes of S 31° 55.155 and CD to the decimal minutes of E 152° 27.625
