Geocache Description:

The River Road Memorial Carpark

The River Road by-pass to Upper Hutt, so called because it runs alongside the Hutt River, began construction in 1978 after being commissioned by the Upper Hutt City Council. On the 26th of February 1985, two construction workers building the road were killed instantly when the tyre of a large earthmover truck they were working beside exploded.

A carpark was built at this location and a memorial stone and plaque was placed onsite, so that there was a memorial to their tragic deaths. This cache was placed near this location, on the 24th anniversary of this accident.

About the cache

The cache consists of a camo screwtop "test tube-like" container with room only for a logsheet and pencil - In the event that the pencil is blunt or broken, please bring your own writing implement as backup. Let me know if the pencil becomes blunt or broken and I will attend to it ASAP.

About the location

Please note that the cache location is best accessed when travelling SOUTH on the River Road. There is a double yellow line so U turns are prohibited and being a State Highway (SH2) the frequency and speed of traffic would make this dangerous to attempt. If travelling north, take the right hand turn off into Riverstone Terraces, some 300m past the memorial carpark, and turn around at this intersection. It's a much safer option!

Please note that the carpark is besides the Hutt River Trail that is frequently used by walkers, cyclists, joggers, cars, etc, all of which can appear very suddenly and without warning so show some stealth when searching for the cache as we don't want it to get muggled.

Please make sure that the cache is replaced *exactly* as found, with the top screwed on tight to keep out moisture!

I have decided to use a log sheet for all Geocachers to record their discoveries and comments, so that when it is full, I can scan the logsheet and attach its image to this cache entry as an archive! Please let me know when the logsheet is nearing maintenance time and I will supply a new sheet.
