Geocache Description:

This short Multi is located in the village of Daresbury, Cheshire. As regard the BOGOF (Buy One Get One Free) we’ll come back to that a little later.

The first stage takes you to one of Daresbury’s Grade II Listed buildings – The Telephone Box! It’s a type K6, designed in 1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, made of cast iron, painted red overall. It has long horizontal glazing with margin panes in the door and sides and has a crown above the telephone opal on the front, back and each side.

Obviously the cache can not be place on, in or around a grade II listed building, so you need to have a look inside for its number. This is ABCDE FGHIJK. The final cache will be found a short distance away at :
N 53 DA.B(E+I)(B+F) W 002 (F-G)(C-B).(B+K)FH

Returning to the BOGOF, having put the effort in for this multi cache, you can get another cache find for free! Geocache GC45CC – “Ye Ole Survey Monuments ” requires you to visit selected trigpoints spread across the country, and to qualify for a find, take its co-ordinates and a photo of the trigpoint with your GPS in view. In fact you can log this cache multiple times – once for each selected trigpoint you find!

Daresbury FBM (Fundamental Bench Mark) is one such trigpoint (YOSM No 012); it’s co-ordinates are given below as a waypoint! Around 200 FBMs were located across the country. They each consist of an underground chamber topped by a small pillar, and were specifically used to determine the height of the land, leading to the spot heights and contour lines on the maps we use today.

This FBM trigpoint can of course be logged on www.trigpointinguk.com (reference TP0524). It can also be logged under the “U.K. and Ireland Trigpoints ” category on www.waymarking.com as can the first stage of this multi-cache under the “Red Telephone Boxes ” category.

Daresbury was also the birthplace of Charles Dodgson, otherwise known as Lewis Carroll who wrote “Alice in Wonderland”. All Saints Church close to the first stage of this cache has a fabulous Lewis Carroll memorial window in the Daniell Chapel. Under the Nativity scene are 5 panels illustrated with characters and scenes from Alice in Wonderland including the White Rabbit, the Lizard, the Dodo, the Caterpillar, Fish-Footman, Mad Hatter, Dormouse, March Hare, Duchess, Gryphon, Mock Turtle, Knave and Queen of Hearts. The famous Cheshire Cat can be found in the centre of the fifth panel. This could also be logged as a waymark under the “Literary Sites ” category.

If you haven’t already found it, a short walk from the suggested parking location is yet another geocache – Simon72’s “Brilliant Bridgewater ” (GCY880), whilst another trigpoint “CLRC Daresbury Laboratory ” (TP7266) is a short drive away. If visiting this, look at images on the trigpointing website as it’s an active station (an aerial on the side of a building) and quite difficult to identify.
