Geocache Description:

Welcome to Poring Hot Springs, located in a corner of Mount Kinabalu National Park a UNSECO World Heritage Site. You may visit Poring on tour, or you could drive up in a rental car easily from KK.

Poring Hot Springs and surrounding attractions including a bat cave (maybe a future Earthcache?), canopy walk, and butterfly exhibit have been popular with international visitors and locals alike for many years. One of our team members visited Poring in the 80's when it was rustic, but today bath houses and a high end restaurant add (or detract) from the experience. We had poor reception (35m) when setting up this cache. Since you will be bathing, for security and continued good functioning of your GPS you may not want to take your GPS into the hot springs area. Therefore, here is where the coordinates should get you: At the top of the free public pools, there is an information sign (contains info you need to log) and the old bathing pools. This area is also the start of the trail to the bat cave and canopy walk etc. This is as close to the source as we could get. Look a little higher up to see the big round holding tank for the hot water – you can check the gage on the tank (info you need to log). Earthcaches do not have a physical box or logbook, rather you should learn something at the site and demonstrate that learning to log the Earthcache online. Online Logging Requirements 1. Visit the Earth cache site in person. Prove you were there by posting a photo with your log of you at the hot springs, or emailing the cache owner other proof you visited like telling what function the small building near the coordinates plays. 2. Tell about your experiences at Poring in your online log. Entertain us and help future cachers have a better experience with your tips. Be sure to experience the Earthcache by taking a soak. Try to get a private bathhouse as the water pressure is WAY better making it worth the small extra charge. Just don’t cook your eggs or do laundry in the top pools (this seems to have been a problem). Email to the Owner two things: 3. Determine what two chemical compounds, other then H2O, are found in Poring Hot Springs (hint: read the detailed sign) 4. Can you determine how hot the springs are and why the temperature varies so much (hint: ask a staff member or two about this) OR how much water was in the big round tank when you visited? Information about the Site: Poring is a non-volcanic hot spring, and therefore not as hot as some of its more famous volcanic cousins. Like all non-volcanic hot springs, Poring water is heated by geothermal heat or heat from the Earth's interior. Generally the temperature of rocks within the earth increases with depth through the geothermal gradient. In the case of Poring, the water is thought to percolate deeply enough into the crust to become heated by hot crystalline igneous rocks deep down. The super heated water forms vaporizes into steam, losing some of its temperature as it rises, reforming into water near the surface. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poring for details on attractions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinabalu_National_Park for details on the larger park. http://www.sabahparks.org.my/ controls the site.
