In the 17th century (1630), Gothenburg boasted the most advanced defense system in Europe. It had a water-filled moat, a wall around the entire city, and two fortified towers "Skansen Kronan" and "Skansen Lejonet".

Amsterdam, with its regular blocks and channels with trees and bridges, served as the master plan for the building as the Dutch were the architects and leading the building of the city.
In the picture above you can see that the system were more extensive than today, many of the channels has been filled to give place for the trafic.
Examples are the East and West harbour street.(Östra och västra hamngatan)

The channels around the city and the Great harhour in the center of the city had recirkulation and water came from different rivers outside the city.
Water for all purposes, drinking, washing and latrin came and were poured back in the channels during the 17th century.
You can imagine the smell in a warm summer day 1715 when the kings pirate "Lasse i gatan" had his house on "lilla torget" by the harbour channel.
A more extensive description of the channel system can be found here (In Swedish)
