Just east of downtown Raleigh is Chavis Park, which was opened in the summer of 1938. Today, this community facility serves as a city-wide resource, beckoning residents with its rolling natural landscape and one of Raleigh's two antique carousels, this one designed by the Allan Herschell Company in the 1920s.
Chavis Park has been home to the No.2, Special Three Abreast, Allan Herschell Carousel since 1937. It was purchased from the Allan Herschell Company for the sum of $4000. This carousel was refurbished before it was sold to the City of Raleigh. Therefore, this carousel possibly dates from 1923 or earlier and probably traveled before it was located here. The band organ is a Wurlitzer 146A with an ornately carved and decorated façade.
The Allan Herschell Carousel remains a historical treasure enjoyed by children of all ages.
The carousel has been moved from it's original location to a new climate controled building at the other end of the parking lot.
The carousel is open to ride from May through September.
Unlike the carousel you will be out in the open and visible to muggles of all kinds. Cache is a magnetic key container. Please replace cache as found. There is a special prize for FTF.
Note: The Muggle Factor is high in Chavis Park, so be aware.
Raleigh P&R allow caches that meet GC.com guidelines.
