This cache has been placed to pay tribute to Military Aviators both past and present. With Memorial Day drawing near, feel free to honor and recognize all veterans if you desire. Cache is a large green 50 caliber ammo container.
In 1963, two (2) Navy pilots perished when their A-6 Intruder flamed-out during a low-level training manuever and crashed very near these coordinates. A third man managed to eject and landed in a nearby field breaking his leg. Other than a very few small pieces of aluminum scattered under the moss and ferns on the hillside above, until now nothing existed to recognize their loss except the accounts of the incident by locals. I wasn't very old at the time, but I can vividly recall the wreckage in the road and a house damaged by flying debris. That house no longer exists and nature has reclaimed the area. You may want to take the container to your vehicle to spend time examining contents. There are some rules for this cache. FIRST, keep cache container and contents as dry as possible. SECOND, some of the contents need to be left in the cache for all cachers to view. THIRD, there are a couple of books in the cache that can be temporarily removed to review. Please replace them when done. Temporarily exchanging them would be even better. FOURTH, one of the items that stays in the cache is a pilots log. Pilots and Families can log the names and information of Aviators service and accomplishments if they wish to honor them. Photos are welcomed as well.
