Geocache Description:

This is a letterbox hybrid cache that I placed in a remote section of forest near the Castile entrance of Letchworth State Park. The cache is a medium sized container.

Letchworth State Park Permit # LSP-29

Park at the gate at the Castile Entrance of Letchworth State Park and then follow the power line into the forest.

I have hidden this Letterbox Hybrid in one of my favorite places in the forests of the south end of Letchworth State Park. The posted coordinates will take you to a place where you will find yourself standing in the middle of 4 monarchs of the forest. There will be 3 different types of trees in this place. There is a very large sugar maple, a cucumber tree, and 2 tulip trees surrounding you. One of these tulip trees is enormous and one of the largest trees of this type I have seen in the park. Try to imagine though that these trees can get much larger if they were in a virgin forest. All the land at one time in this area was cleared and farmed, so the huge trees that you see here are second growth. There are some very large beech trees in this area and they can be identified as the trees you see with the smooth gray bark. Another thing you may care to notice is a small stump in the area of the 4 giants because this stump is the remains of a long dead American Chestnut tree. If you look toward the northwest you can spot a huge ash tree with a very large trunk.

OK, now that you have arrived in the area the coordinates take you to, I ask that you first take a few moments and stand amongst the giants around you and take in the ambiance that a place like this offers. It will make you feel rather small and much younger when you consider the age of the 4 living creatures standing around you. Then you need to look South/Southwest and walk about 100 - 110 feet or 52 normal paces in that direction to arrive in the area where the cache is hidden. I ask that you please refrain from digging, tearing off bark or pieces of the trees in your search because it will not be necessary for finding the cache. My goal here is to show you a beautiful natural setting in an old forest and I would like the area to look as though it had never been visited before, so that each cacher can enjoy the unspoiled beauty of the forest. Please replace the cache exactly how you found it, and make sure that the container is sealed. A simple rule of the forest to remember is this, leave only foot prints but take away some wonderful memories with you. If you are doing the GPS-O cache there is a marker over the hill to the north of the start coordinates.

There will be a stamp pad in the cache along with the usual cache swag. First finder gets a handmade Paleoman arrowhead. The next 5 finders can grab a scratch off lottery ticket and try their luck. Please be honest and only take one ticket per finder.

I wish to extend my “Thanks” to Roland Beck, Letchworth Park Manager, for reviewing and approving the placement of this cache.
