Geocache Description:

Some lug just got bumped off! Can you figure out who turned the guy into a stiff?

June, 1928. The "Roaring Twenties" are in full swing. Calvin Coolidge is in the White House, rolling back taxes and managing a booming economy. Mae West is taking Broadway by storm with a daring new play called "Diamond Lil," and in Hollywood, a young Walt Disney is putting the finishing touches on something called "Steamboat Willie." It is, for many Americans, a time of prosperity and excess.

You're a private eye with a bottle for a best friend. One day, a looker by the name of Monica Powell opens the door to your office. She saunters across the room and drops a file on your desk. You consider asking how she obtained a confidential police file about her famous father, but then you eyeball her dress; she's got more curves than a roller coaster in an earthquake. You thumb through the paperwork and pick up the summary, written by a Sergeant Duffy. It reads:

"G. Harold Powell was a smart cookie. With a master's degree from Cornell, he advised Orange County citrus farmers on topics ranging from cold storage to disease eradication. As general manager of the Irvine Valencia Growers Exchange, he advised the cooperative to build a packing house, and even went so far as to recommend a contractor, F.S. Bishop Construction. Harry was not without his enemies, however. One of the competing bids, submitted by Walter Shepherd, was considered the front-runner until Powell convinced the growers that the bid was fixed. In a rage, Shepherd cornered Powell in a dark alley, and rubbed him out."

You close the file and look Monica square in the eye. "So Daddy took a slug for double-crossing Shepherd? Seems like a done deal to me," you conclude. Monica takes a deep breath, then responds, "Although the case was closed, I don't believe Shepherd was the trigger man. Before he died, my father wrote a letter that fingered the real killer. Find it, and I'd be so very grateful." You open a drawer, but instead of reaching for the whiskey, you grab a Smith & Wesson. "Alright, I'll shake down a few goons, and see what I can find out."

A short time later, you find yourself at the crime scene. The answer is here, you can smell it. To get the lowdown, start by answering the following questions.

FIRST STOP: IRVINE VALENCIA GROWERS MOSAIC
N33° 42.203, W117° 45.215

Start your investigation at the posted coordinates.

1. Harry Powell was quite fond of linen suits. In what position (working from left to right) would you find the "Linen" logo? Call it A.
2. Monica once dated a two-bit actor named "Serge." In what position (again, working from left to right) would you find the "Serge" logo? Call it B.

SECOND STOP: THE RAILROAD COMES TO IRVINE
N33° 42.249, W117° 45.216

Something tells you to take a hike. Travel DUE NORTH, and look for a small area with a railroad theme.

3. Find the year that marked the "arrival of the railroad." Subtract the fourth digit from the third digit, and call the result C.
4. Find the size of the depot site (it's in acres). Divide that number by 2, and call it D.

THIRD STOP: REMEMBERING THE PAST
N33° 42.270, W117° 45.186

Hit the pavement one more time. Travel NORTHEAST along the path and find the large plaque.

5. What's the last digit of the year the concrete wall and salvaged timbers were constructed? Call it E.
6. Find the year the precooler was built. What's the third digit of the year? Call it F.

Put the number values into the following equation to come up with the final coords: N33 42.ABC, W117 45.DEF. Have fun!
