Geocache Description:

“BASEBALL HISTORY 4 - 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers”

1955 Dodgers

Ebetts Field

The Dodgers played professional baseball in Brooklyn from 1890 through 1957. They won 12 National League titles, but only one World Series. "Wait until next year" but become the mantra of Dodger fans and the team was commonly referred to as the "Bums". To make matters worse, it was frequently the cross-burrough rival Yankees who were often winning the World Series. The Yankees and Dodgers would meet in 4 World Series in the 50's and it was finally the 1955 team that put prior disappointments out of the minds of their fans.

The 1955 World Series started off with the Yankees taking the first two games. But then an unexpected thing happened. Johnny Podres, a rookie pitcher who was only 9-10 in the regular season, pitched a great game 3 and the Dodgers won 8-3. The Dodgers won the next two games to take a 3-2 lead. The Yankees won game 6 and it would all come down to a 7th game. Once again, Dodger coach Walter Alston went to Podres. He came through again as the Dodgers won 2-0 taking their first championship. A turning point in the game is a famous play in left field by Sandy Amoros. He made a fantastic running catch on a drive by Yogi Berra, which would have tied the game. Instead a runner was doubled up at first and the Dodgers shut down the Yankees the rest of the way.

The 1955 Dodgers were a legitimate World Champion. The roster was filled with many tremendous players, several who have gone on to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Some of the better known players include:

Jackie Robinson
Pee Wee Reese
Duke Snider
Gil Hodges (native of Princeton Indiana)
Roy Campanella
Don Newcombe
Carl Erskine (native of Anderson Indiana)
Sandy Koufax (seldom used rookie)
