A nice little jaunt to an old iron bridge
Warwick Furnace Road follows the South Branch of the French Creek and carried iron from the Warwick Furnace to Coventry Forge, as well as the first Franklin Stove. George Washington marched his troops down this road just before the Valley Forge encampment. In 1889 a new modern bridge was ordered and delivered here.
This bridge is a Pony Pin Truss. Look carefully at the I-beams that make up the main support structure. Instead of a single piece of rolled metal, they consist of angle iron segments bolted together into a box beam. There are some i-beams… you’ll have to discover them for yourselves.
