Geocache Description:

In September 2008, a tree-service truck hired by the nearby hotel pulled up to this centuries-old oak and workers began cutting limbs in preparation for taking the whole tree down. People driving by on Newtown Pike and Interstate 64-75 saw what was happening and started calling City Hall.

Due to some quick action, officials found that the previous development plan when the restuarant next door was built specified that it must be preserved and that saved it from a certain fate. The oak has some missing and abbreviated limbs, but it still stands and appears healthy despite the recent events.

Going forward, the newly-formed Lexington Tree Board is working with local government to identify herirage trees such as this giant and determine ways and define a process to protect such trees that are puiblic as well as private property in the Lexington area. The Lexington Tree Board wants to "pay tribute to the silent survivors of our time" by recognizing trees that are at least 100 years old. If you have such a tree, and it's in good shape, call (859) 277-0731 and leave a message.

The cache is a camougflaged, lock-m-lock with log and room for small trade items. As always bring your own writing instrumentv just in case. Please do NOT access this cache from the I-75/64 ramp and instead park at the nearby restaurant. Thanks.
