INDIANA
SPIRIT QUEST #671
"Maple Hill
Cemetery"
This quest will bring you to the Maple
Hill cemetery in Plainfield. While this is largely a modern
cemetery there is an older part at the southern end. Here you will
find many Civil War veterans, as well as veterans from World War I
and more recent wars. This is is a well cared for cemetery.
Entrance is from the west side of the cemetery on a street that is
one-way south. The cemetery is open from 8:00AM until dusk each
day.
Indiana 11th Regiment
Veteran
Benjamin Worth was a member of the 11th Indiana Volunteer
Infantry Regiment. This regiment is noteworthy for two reasons.
First their commanding officer was Lew Wallace, who later became
famous as the author of Ben Hur. Second, they were a Zouave
regiment. There were 75 Union Zouave regiments and 25 Confederate
units who wore Zouave uniforms. Zouave units wore colorful,
North-African uniforms, patterned after French units that served in
Africa.
The 11th saw much action in the western theater of the Civil War,
participating in battles at Shiloh, Corinth, andVicksburg. In 1864
they were transferred east and took part in the Shenandoah Valley
campaign.
The unit lost 115 men to combat and 173 to disease.

John Douglass, 51st Indiana Civil War
Veteran
The 51st Indiana also participated in several western battles,
including Shiloh, Corinth and Stones River. They were also at the
Battle of Perryville in Kentucky, although they spent the battle in
reserve.
They also participated in Streight's Raid. General Abel Streight
(buried at Crown Hill) led a raid into Alabama with the intent of
severing the western and Atlantic Railroad, thereby damanging
Confederate supply lines. His troops were dogged by famous Southern
cavalry commander Nathan Bedford Forrest. After several days of
running skirmishes, the exhausted Union troops surrendered and were
sent to Libby Prison in Richmond Virginia. They were eventually
exchanged and the regiment was reformed in Indianapolis. They spent
the rest of the war in Tennessee, fighting in the battles at
Nashville and Franklin.
The regiment lost 56 men to combat and 208 to
disease.
World War 1
Veteran
Walter Havens was a member of the 38th Infantry Division. This
division was a National Guard unit formed in 1917 and is still
operating today out of Stout Field in Indianapolis. The unit was
sent to Europe 6 month before the end of WW I, where its members
were dispersed to other units as replacements.
