Geocache Description:

When you find this micro-cache, you will have walked right past a small area surrounded by a low iron railing, that marks the gravesite of a notorious outlaw, Oliver Badgero, of the infamous Markham Gang. This gang terrorized southern Ontario in the 1840’s, long before anyone had heard of the Mafia. The Markham gang members came from Markham, Pickering, Uxbridge, Whitby, and Reach Townships and were all from respectable and successful families, mainly merchants, farmers, and businessmen. They committed thefts, brutal home invasions, horse stealing, and even murder.

The gang was highly organized with loyalty oaths, secrecy, cryptic language, and a sophisticated distribution system for stolen goods. They were also accused of bribery of police and court officials. Many members were indicted but never captured, or captured and then had their sentences commuted, with records mysteriously disappearing.

Books have been written about this gang including: “Mayhem to Murder: The History of the Markham Gang” by Durham historian Paul Arculus. Oliver Badgero was a ringleader of the group. Prior to joining the gang, he spent time in Kingston Penitentiary for his involvement in the rebellion of 1837 led by William McKenzie, against the British. While here, enjoy the lovely trails that abound in this park.

Congratulations GPS Derek on FTF on a bitter cold day!
