During construction of the Talla water main in 1905, which is an aqueduct which carries water from Talla reservoir to Edinburgh, a survey tower was built to aid in the planning of the route. A number of pillars were also built, and they still dot the surrounding landscape today. Some of these can be seen from the road.
A transit instrument, somewhat like a telescope was housed at the top of this tower. There was once a roof overhead to protect it, but that has long since rotted away. Please note that the tower is no longer safe to enter, and it should only be viewed from outside.
A short distance to the west of the tower is an ancient burial cist called a long cairn from the Neolithic Age. It’s now reduced to a grassy mound that is approximately 55 metres long. It is wedge shaped, with the eastern end of the cairn measuring about 16 metres wide.
It is easy to park on Deanfoot Road (which runs from Penicuik to West Linton) and walk to the cache.
