Teatro Giuseppe Verdi

Dopo che la Rocca Pallavicino (attuale Palazzo Municipale) venne
acquistata dal Comune nel 1856, iniziarono immediatamente i lavori
per la costruzione di un nuovo Teatro intitolato a Giuseppe Verdi.
I lavori di costruzione durarono 12 anni circa e il Teatro venne
inaugurato il 15 agosto 1868 con la messa in scena delle opere
Rigoletto e Un ballo in maschera; per l'occasione, in onore del
Maestro, le signore indossarono abiti di colore verde mentre i
signori il verde lo ebbero nelle cravatte. Nonostante ciò Verdi non
presenziò all'inaugurazione, né mai vi mise piede nel teatro a lui
intitolato ritenendolo troppo costoso e inutile, nonostante avesse
donato ben 10.000 Lire per la sua realizzazione.

Il Teatro nel suo periodo di attività ha rappresentato quasi tutte
le opere verdiane, le stagioni del 1913 e del 1926 furono dirette
da Arturo Toscanini mentre nel 2001 Riccardo Muti vi ha diretto
Falstaff e Franco Zeffirelli ha curato l'allestimento dell'Aida e
nel 2002 de La Traviata diretta da Plácido Domingo.



VERDI THEATRE

Planned by the architect Montecchini, built between 1859 and 1864
by Giovanni Sivelli, decorated by Parma artists Biasi and Malpeli,
with the beautiful allegorical ceiling completed by the Busseto
artist Gioacchino Levi in 1868, it was solemnly inaugurated on
August 15th, 1868 with two Verdi operas: Un ballo in maschera and
Rigoletto.

Previously another theatre had occupied the site, where Verdi had
performed in his youth, directing a symphony for Il Barbiere di
Siviglia by Rossini.

The new theatre was provided with efficient functional structures:
a deep stage equipped with scenery, machinery and many dressing
rooms, and in the hall two orders of sixteen boxes each and a
balcony, foyer and smoking room, "trattoria", rehearsal rooms,
scenery salon and bronze chandeliers. During its 120 years of
existence almost all of Verdi's operas have been performed.

Recently restored, adapted for safety regulations and reopened to
the public, it can seat 300 spectators.
