In 1941 Carl Karcher and his wife Margaret raised $326 by putting up $15 in cash and borrowing $311 against their Plymouth Super Deluxe. They used this money to buy a hot dog stand in Los Angeles. They added more stands and in 1945, the Karcher's moved to Anaheim, Margaret's hometown, and opened Carl's Drive-In Barbecue on North Palm Street. It was the first restaurant to use the now-familiar star logo. Palm Street is now Harbor Blvd. This restaurant was just South of this location. CKE Restaurants Inc., the company Karcher founded, now has more than 3000 restaurants under the Carl's Jr., Hardee's and La Salsa brands. Annual sales are over $1.5 billion. Karcher counted as friends President Ronald Reagan and Bob Hope, not bad for a farm boy from Ohio who dropped out of school after eighth grade. The Karcher's bought a house in 1949, near this location, and raised 12 children. Both of the Karcher's have recently passed away. Karl will always be a super star and he has a star in the Anaheim walk of fame near Disneyland.
