PRETZEL BAKEOFF UPDATE:

Here are some guidelines for participation in the Pretzel Contest:

1. Upon arrival, sign in to BOTH the event and the pretzel contest
2. Be sure to have your pretzel dish labeled with your geocaching name & the name of your pretzel recipe. If you are including a copy of the recipe, also attach that.
3. Bring your pretzel masterpiece to the pretzel judging area (it will be pretty obvious when you arrive!)
4. There will be special geocaching prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

The current panel of pretzel judges is as follows:

* Slydogfl
* Yuzawa Kat
* Burgi Dad
* Entomophile
* Flying Lemur
* Cricket Hunter

SPECIAL REQUEST: Although we two shelters reserved at the event, table space and seating is limited, so it would be helpful if anyone who can would bring folding chairs and folding tables. Please post in a note what you will be bringing.

What…you’ve never heard of National Pretzel Day?!? National Pretzel Day was first proclaimed by Congress back in 1983 which is rather surprising since the National Pretzel Bakers Institute has been in existence well before that time. As a matter of fact, at one time, the president of the institute, Alex V. Tisdale, encouraged the promotional aspects of pretzels by offering an explanation as to the meaning of the twists which are suppose to represent "folded arms in prayer." The amount of time and energy Mr. Tisdale and his wife spent promoting the pretzel industry, especially in Pennsylvania, would be reason enough to celebrate National Pretzel Day in their honor. They traveled one week each month year round, making an average of 20 radio and television appearances promoting pretzels. Back in the early 50's, the Tisdales were on the Johnny Carson show, the Groucho Marx show, and the Ernie Kovacs show. In 1954, a year after they began extensive travels, they even presented pretzels to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Mr. Tisdale went as far as publishing a bi-monthly magazine titled “The World of Pretzels” which he compiled from his home in PA. You may not hear much about Alex V. Tisdale as he has since passed away but, if you ever get to visit Lititz, Pennsylvania, you may find his name engraved on the marker which decorates the place where the first pretzels were baked in America; The Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery. Pretzels also happen to be Marc’s favorite snack food, so in honor of this salty delicacy, we will be celebrating National Pretzel Day with a Meet & Greet at the lovely Lake Rogers Park!

Lake Rogers Park is a 272-acre joint venture between Hillsborough County and the City of St. Petersburg and is located on Gunn Highway, north of Ehrlich Road. Natural features within the park include two fresh water lakes, pine flatwoods, and oak hammocks. As you hike along these lovely trails, you are a likely to encounter a plethora of wildlife, including a variety of water fowl, bald eagles and any number of other mammals and reptiles. Facilities at the park include picnic shelters, picnic tables, nature trails, barbecue grills, fishing, canoeing, and, of course, many fine caches to find!

The event will be a typical M&M no-frills meet, eat & cache type of day. However, there will be one special event – in honor of National Pretzel Day, we will be hosting a “Pretzel Bake-Off.” Here’s what you have to do to “enter”:

1. Bake pretzels (there’s all sorts of gourmet stuff out there)
2. Bring a copy of the recipe
3. Let our specially picked and “trained” panel of judges taste you pretzels
4. Special prizes for the winners!
5. Share pretzels with the crowd!!

Oh yeah…we’ll also be having a potluck lunch so please bring your favorite edible, including salads, beverages, baked goods, chips and whatever else may satisfy a geocacher's hunger. We will also need paper goods, such as plates, utensils, napkins, etc. When you log your "will attend", please let us know what you would like to bring so we can keep track here.

Please note that if you also plan to hunt for the North West Equestrian Trail caches, you will need to obtain a parking permit from the park office (don’t worry…it’s free and easy…the park rangers know all about geocaching and are happy to have us there!) This really is a beautiful place and we hope you come to enjoy the camaraderie and the caches!

...And now for the standard M&M disclaimers!

Dense tree cover may affect your final GPS readings so of course you may have to use your geocaching intuition to find the actual cache. Please rehide the cache...oh, never mind!
