Jonesboro Memories Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Sayitagain: When I placed this cache years ago it was an attempt to publicize this great trail. Since that time the Boy Scouts have marked trees designating where the trail is and the last two times I’ve hiked in to replace it after it’s been muggled I’ve met quite a few people walking the trail so I think that enough people know about the Two Rivers trail that runs from Conner Park to the Two Rivers bridge that I can go ahead and archive this cache since the original ammo box that gave it its name disappeared about a year ago and it’s a major hike down the ravine to do maintenance on it.

Geocache Description:

A 50 cal ammo box located on a little known trail. Trail is rocky but still easy to walk even for children. You might bring your hiking stick.NOTE!!!!: Look for trail markings to your right as you walk down from Southridge. If you follow the powerline all the way you will come out on top of the cache location and have to backtrack.

These co ordinates will take you to a place I found about three years in River Mountain Park. I had worked for the City Parks Department almost 31 years and never walked the valley between River Mountain Road and Southridge Drive in Walton Heights even though it was all city owned land. When I started checking with other people in the Parks Department I found out nobody else had ever walked the entire distance either so we picked a day and about 6 of us walked it . It’s really a beautiful walk along a small stream with several small waterfalls especially after a rain. When I saw this particular spot I knew I had to place a cache here. It’s only taken me three years to do it. We made this hike again last Friday with a representative of the Boy Scouts who, we are hoping will take on the task of linking River Mountain and Conner Park with a trail. This was a project envisioned almost 40 years ago when the city first acquired both properties. The cache container I have placed here was one I got two years ago at an event in Jonesboro. The Director of the Jonesboro Parks Department asked Team Pink if they could organize a geo caching event for the Annual Arkansas Recreation and Park Conference to give those people who didn’t want to play golf something to do on the first day of the conference and give those who did not know much about geo caching a chance to learn more. Team Pink put out the call for help and area cachers turned out in force to promote this wonderful sport. I was lucky enough to leave Craighead Forest that day with an example of a geo cache that my good buddy Woodwalker9 brought to the event to show what a well done cache looks like. I have used this container in the same way over the last two years in presentations I have made on geo caching but I feel now its time to place it out in the woods where it belongs where other cachers can find it. If you would like to read about the Jonesboro event check out GC10FBR.
Cache is a 50 cal ammo container and original contents include a coozie, bag of marbles, pair of binoculars, a Mark Rocks geo token and several other items including an Arkansas geo coin, the first trackable I’ve ever set free. The trip to the cache location will entail a round trip hike of about a mile if entering off Southridge Drive. There is an established trail head at that location and the trail is marked with pieces of white plastic attached to trees once you get partway down into the ravine. The trailhead is very easy to spot. Just follow Southridge Drive up the hill and a massive electric power pole seems to be right in the middle of the road. The point where the power line crosses the road is the trail head. The actual coordinates are N34 48.018 W092 24.581. If accessing from River Mountain road the round trip is about a mile and a half starting at the end of the guard rail on the West side .You can park at N34 47.818 W092 23.175. There are no trail markings at that spot so you’ll just have to follow your GPS down the hill until you get to the bottom and then follow the creek bed. The ideal way to do this cache is with two cars, parking one at each end because then it’s only about a mile and a quarter trek and you get to see the entire trail.
