Geocache Description:

Barnet Church, St John the Baptist

Formerly Curse of the FTF Greater London #2 This series is run by FantasticCat and is a continuation of the series that Dorsetgal has started in Dorset (GC1K6MX) , after hearing about it how it got established in the US on the Podcacher Podcast.

Hopefully in time it will become established nationwide! The hide is a transparent film pot secured  in place with a magnet. Please put it back carefully. Please also look properly before post and  PLEASE do not post a "did  not find log" until you have checked thoughly!

Unfortunately Groundspeak has now prohibited the publication of caches which required you to hide another cache as a condition of logging the FTF find so you do NOT have to place another cache as a condition of logging the FTF but it would be nice if you did so the chain was not broken!.

Guidelines for this series were as set the find.out below :

1. FTF'er may place the next cache in the series (in this case, The Curse of the FTF #3) within 1 month... Otherwise the curse could prevent you from ever getting another FTF again!!! Muhahahahahahahaha!

2. You can only be a FTF for this series once. This spreads the FTF love around, and gives others a chance to play along.

3. Cache can be any type of cache (Puzzle, Multi, etc.), but FantasticCat suggests that You can set it in Greater London (there are 33 London boroughs making up Greater London; Enfield in the North down to Croydon and Bromley in the South, Hillingdon in the West through to Havering in the East)

4. You could include this set of guidelines in your listing for the series FantasticCat will be happy to answer any questions concerning the guidelines or about the placing of caches to those who have not placed a cache before.

By way of clarification, there is NO requirement besides the standard signing of the cache log to prevent you from logging this cache when found. Everyone should log their find, and hopefully the FTF person will play along and place another cache, but it is in no way a requirement for logging your find. Right on to the cache itself!

The cache is located at Barnet Church This cache is placed on the OUTSIDE of the church with the kind permission of the church. Please DO NOT abuse this by searching for the cache inside the church or round the graves outside the church. Please also DO NOT park on the land near the Church. Please travel to the cache by bike or by public transport . If you have to use a car please park on the parking spaces on the public highway which are metered during the day and early evening.

The church web site is at http://www.achurchnearyou.com/chipping-barnet-st-john-the-baptist/ Barnet Church, St John the Baptist, which stands in what was the centre of the town, was erected by John de la Moote, abbot of St Albans, about 1400, the architect being Beauchamp. It consists of a nave and aisles separated by clustered columns which support four pointed arches; a chancel with an east window of good Perpendicular tracery; a vestry, built in the reign of James I by Thomas Ravenscroft. In 1875 the church was nearly totally rebuilt at a cost of £16,000, to designs by William Butterfield The north aisle is all that remain of the 15th century church.

There is a local belief that the tower is the highest point between itself and the Ural Mountains to the east. It is more likely that Barnet stands on the highest ground betwixt London and York though this has not been verified. There is a wonderful view from the tower of the Church Tower which is open weather permiting every Saturday in July and August 10.30 am to 1 pm. Be warned there are 100 steps to the top of the tower! Turning to pure fiction,

Barnet is mentioned in Charles Dickens Oliver Twist as the place where Oliver Twist met the Arteful Dodger "Oliver limped slowly into the little town of Barnet, wondering at the great number of Public Houses - every other house in Barnet was a tavern large or small".

There was a badge for the first to find. “If anybody would like to expand this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first at churchmicro@gmail.com so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list”
