There has been a mill on the bank of the River Wear below the Cathedral since at least the 1400s, when two mills were recorded as belonging to the Bishop of Durham.
Fulling is the beating and cleaning of cloth in water. The process shrank the loose fibres of the cloth, making it a denser fabric. Superior cloth was usually fulled, dyed, brushed with teasels to raise the pile, and finally trimmed of loose threads to produce a finished surface of great quality.
The present mill is mostly 18th Century construction and is iconic in the view of Durham. Most tourist pictures of Durham show the Cathedral view with the river and the old mill (See background image)
The mill now houses the Museum of Archaeology which opened in 1833, it has some excellent displays and is well worth a visit.
As usual for Durham, satellite coverage can be poor, my GPS did seem to calm after a while.
