Geocache Description:

Short walk from the parking area This rest area is on the westbound side of the freeway so if your heading east take the American Canyon exit. It is Wheelchair Accessible. Also there are 2 other caches at this location (GC164X5 & GC2P7RE ) Welcome to the new and improved rest area. The plaque is gone but you should still be able to do this one maybe do a little reasearch on the internet

There are 4 kinds of landslides:1- Debris slide 2- Earth flow 3-Slump 4-Rock slide

These land slides may seem like nothing, as long as it is your neighbors house and not yours. But the damage they can cause on a whole can be worse then the damage caused by an earthquake. Most of the coastal range is covered with deep soil. Add some water, shake it a little and down comes the hill.

Every area along the coastal range has them. Most landslides start with a curving fracture in the ground then water gets down and under the soil. Then more cracks at the top of the slope form. It may start with a few little slides and then all of it or all of it at once. Most slides hang precariously on the slope until something triggers them into catastrophic movement. It could be earthquake, heavy rain, sonic boom or a combination of all. Whether they move slowly, catastrophically, slides typically leave a curving scar in the fracture surface on the hillside where it started. And they land as a hummocky dump of debris somewhere below.

Try to imagine what this place looked like a million years ago. When you leave look across the highway up the hill to the east you will see yellow biking sign look past the sign and you will see one of these flows and how it is exposing the sand stone underneath. Read about these landslides on the plaque at the posted cords.
