BFL BOOT CAMP IV - THE HUNT FOUR L.E.D. OCTOBER Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

northernpenguin: I'd like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone that was involved with this event, from the organizers who were out in the woods for months setting everything up, to all of you who showed up at the pub, the command centre and the caches. We had a great time at the command centre listening to the stories as they started coming in throughout the night.

We're already talking about what to do for BFL 5, coming next October (ish).

Geocache Description:

The fourth annual night caching event in North Halton.

THE MISSION

This is the fourth annual night caching event that we call BFL Boot Camp. It is prepared by the members of the Order of the BFL, a group of night cachers from the area.

The event format is simple. We have some food at a pub then we head out to the woods with our flashlights in hand. Each year, we've launched some caches that night to add to the fun. During the entire evening, we also operate a drop in location that is used to co-ordinate the night's events and as a rest stop for cachers. You will definitely find at least one event organizer here during the event. Others will be out on the trails.

This year, a format change. The posted co-ordinates are for the actual "command centre" as we've called the location for the last three years since the first Boot Camp event. This is the first time the command centre has not been a secret location until we "launch" from the pubs.

COMMAND HQ

The Command Centre is where you can drop in, during the event - have some hot chocolate and mingle with other nocturnal geocachers. The command centre will be operating from 9:30PM to 4:00AM on the event night. Feel free to drop by, or hang out with us at any point during that time. Visiting the Command Centre at some point in the evening will be required to post an "attended" log, and the logbook will be located here.

MESS HALL

The tradition of meeting at a pub, or pubs will be maintained - you will find the meal location as a child waypoint on this listing, once the pub(s) are finalized. Make sure you contact the host of the pub, or post a note to obtain a seat for the event. The pubs will not be listed as separate events, as they are all just one part of the BFL Boot Camp event.

UPDATE: The pub has been announced - we are meeting at The Post Office Pub in Milton @ N43 30.822 W79 52.972. This pub can accomodate up to 170 people

    FIELD NOTES:

Make no mistakes about it: This event is about teaching proper ways to enjoy geocaching at night. There are several caches activated in the vicinity of the Command Centre, and there could be more shortly. You can choose to visit them, or not - that's up to you. If you do decide to visit them, keep in mind that caching at night is a little different than caching in the daytime. Obvious perils in daylight may be obscured at night.

Some of the topics you can learn at the Command Centre include:
You should stick to the trails whenever possible, there will be less hazards on an established trail, and less damage to the environment too.

It is VERY important that you follow the instructions on a night cache. They are set up in a specific way, often this will prove to be the easiest, and safest route to the cache. Oh the humour I've read when people have tried to create shortcuts on some of my night caches. We've been known to design caches that will deliberately lead you astray if you don't read the instructions

If you're visiting the caches, please remember the following:

  • A flashlight. Typically you want to get an LED based headlamp for best results. A lot of night caches use retro-reflective markers. These are only visible when your light is near your eyes.

  • Extra batteries for the flashlight, and the GPS. The alternative is to be blind and not know where the car is, and it's over a kilometer away

  • Your GPS. Reason for this should be obvious.

  • A 'warm' layer of clothes. Temperatures drop at night - sometimes faster than you would like to think. Watch the weather forecast for event day - past years have featured rainstorms, windstorms, snowstorms and trees falling across trails/roads.

  • A communication device. Cell phone, and/or a FRS/GMRS radio set to channel 2.

  • Your brain. Don't do anything stupid. Watch where you are walking. If it seems wrong, STOP. Go back.

    TIMELINE (Subject to Change!)

  • 7:00pm Pubs open
  • 8:30pm Some organizers depart pubs for Command Centre setup
  • 9:30pm Command Centre opens for operations
  • 4:00am Command Centre closes, see you next year!

Please do not go to the Command Centre before 9:15, to ensure we can get everything set-up.
