Beautifull walk in historic cemetry with great view of River Fergus
Drumcliff cemetry dates back to as early as the 15th century and it is thought that St.Conall may have founded a monastic setlement in this area.
There are some lovely old monuments to be found inside the grounds as well as a round tower dating back as far as possibly the 10th century.
The remains of an old church dating back to the 15th century.
Special graves are to be found from the Cholera outbreak of the 1830`s, the Great Famine (1846-1849) and some paupers graves. Possibly occupied by the poor from the Ennis Workhouse.
The last internment in this grave is as late as the 1950`s.
In the entrance to the cemetry is a display with all the relevant history of the area as well as directions as to where to find these historical graves.
From the cachesite there is a beautifull view of the river Fergus and the new cemetry across the road.
Personaly i particulary like the Celtic crosses of which there are many different ones to be found here.
From Ennis town, take the N85 to Lahinch and coming up to the 1st round-a-bout Drumcliff is signposted to the right.
There is ample parking by the cemetry.
The cache is in the old cemetery on the left side of the road.
WARNING:
Unfortunately there have been a number of car break-ins in the carparks on either side of the road.
Please take care in leaving no valuables in sight in your car.
Lock stuff away in the boot or better still, take it with you.
Have a safe caching experience, Meave
