This earthcache is located just inside a small Tiny township park called Corrie Hamlin park. Parking is available at this location. The terrain is generally flat with some small stream activity.
Giants Tomb Island is an island with no permanent residents located in Southern Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada. It measures approximately 5 kilometres from north to south and 2 kilometres from east to west. Its name comes from its resembalnce to a giant tomb, supposedly that of the giant native deity, Kitchikewana.
It is part of the Awenda Provincial Park close to Penetanguishene and Midland. To the west there are other islands, Christian Island, Hope Island and Beckwith Island. Beausoleil Island, part of the Georgian Bay Islands National Park is only a few kilometres to the east.
Giants Tomb Island is popular for day trips with boaters as there are excellent sandy beaches and safe swimming.
This cache location is not on park property, but it provides a terrific panoramic view of the island.
Several till units of undetermined age, but probably belonging to the Port Huron Stadial (13, 100-12, 300 years B.P.) were originally deposited on Giants Tomb Island. However, the entire island has been wave-washed at some time, and no fresh till exposures are available for identification. Giants Tomb Island was first exposed to wave action during the Kirkfield Phase of Lake Algonquin (560 feet), approximately12,000 years B.P. The island was submerged for about 1000 years and the top of the "Tomb" was wave bevelled to a flat, roughly 2.5 square mile surface.
The North and West facing slopes of the tomb were oversteepened by erosion, possibly during Nipissing times, and all shoreline features were destroyed. The resulting bluff is quite high and inclined very steeply at approximately 30-35 degrees. The modern day shoreline shows a great diversity of form, from the sand and gravel beaches of the eastern side of the island to the high-energy environment exposed boulder beach of the western shore.
