Geocache Description:

WILLOUGHBY CHURCH

The history of this church and cemetery dates back to 1839 when the first services were held in German in a bush owned by Martin Schaup.

The land here was donated by William H. Sauer(pronounced sour) who at that time owned the adjoining property. In 1883 the present church was built. The church was named Salem Church... the name engraved in the front of the church but the name never stuck. It was called the Willoughby Church and sometimes known as the "Sauer's Church".

The engraving reads

SALEMS KIRSCHE
DER EVANGEISCHEN
GEMEINSCHAFT
A.D. 1883

The church had changed denominations over the years and 1998 due a dwindling congregation was sold and the gent that purchased it used it to assemble Steinberg Pipe Organs and lived had an apartment in the back. He has since passed away.

The cache is micro located outside the cemetery.
The cemetery is now owned by the City Of Niagara Falls.
