Geocache Description:

Cache located at the east (quiet) end of Grange Promenade. Approach to the cache site is wheelchair, pushchair & scooter friendly to within three metres. Actual cache located amongst rocks. DO NOT LEAVE ROCKS & GO ONTO GRASS/SHORE AS GROUND UNSTABLE/SINKING SANDS & AREA IS DESIGNATED SSSI. .

Grange Promenade is just over a mile long and was built in 1904 by Grange Urban District Council enabled by the generous financial assistance from Mr Harold Porritt, Director of a Helmshore Textile Factory who fell in love with the town and eventually made it his home. This coincided with a boom time for Grange-over-Sands which previously had been a quiet fishing village and home of the grain store for the monks of Cartmel Priory. The arrival of the railway in the late 1800’s changed all of that and Grange became known as the ‘Rivera of the North’- THE holiday destination for the rich elite of the Lancashire mill towns.

The prom today is a great traffic free walk with great views out across Morecambe Bay which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The Bay is the second largest bay in the UK containing more than 5% of UK saltmarsh area. Several different rivers flow into the Bay, one being the River Kent whose channel used to pass by the promenade approximately 100 years ago. Since then it has swung away from the shore in Grange towards Arnside leading to silting and subsequent growth of spartina grass seen now from the prom. However, close monitoring of the area indicates that the Kent channel is once more starting to edge closer to the shore at Grange. Who knows, in another 100 years the view from Blawith Point may be different again!

Best access for the cache site is through the railway station underpass. Car parking is available at the station (expensive) or in free one hour bays nearby. Other current promenade access points are: the underpasses from Main Street car park & community playing fields and the footbridge at Blawith Point (no nearby parking available).

There is a playground, café & bowls/skate park along the prom (other café’s in town/opposite ornamental gardens). In the summer PROM ART takes place on the last Sunday of the month which is well worth a visit www.promart.info/
Cache is hidden just off the promenade main walk way. You do need to go onto the rocks, but do not need to go onto the shore. Cache is placed well above normal tidal limit.
Cache box was full of little child friendly swaps when first placed.

We love this quiet little corner of Grange & hope you do too!
