If you are planning on going after this cache you may want to bring along your four legged friend. This cache is near to `Ilio Hau'oli Paka the first City & County of Honolulu off-leash dog park. If you have a dog with you, it may want to stop near the cache to sniff around and see if any friends have been by recently. The cache itself is safe from discovery or possible "water" marking by any dogs passing by.

The Moanalua Dog Park was named `Ilio Hau'oli Paka by a Moanalua Elementary School student named Jeanine Shimomura, she won the "Name the Dog Park" contest sponsored by the Moanalua Gardens Community Association. In Hawaiian it means "Happy Dog Park" and if you stop by to visit you will see lots of happy dogs. The MGCA was the organizaiton responsible for creating the park that opened on April 17, 2004.

The area where the Moanalua Dog Park is located has some interesting history. In ancient times this area was a stopping place for the Ali'i at a place called Lemi Spring. The spring was covered by the freeway overpass in 1973. There is a monument that was built in what is now the dog park near the stone wall, it serves to let people know Lemi Spring once existed very nearby. Because of it's historical significance the City & County has decided to leave it as you see it today.

The park is open 7 days a week during daylight hours, and is closed on Tuesdays until noon for maintenance. For updated information concerning changes in the maintenance schedule or park closures check NEWS on the park website.
