This is one of 11 caches placed for the Cache Across Maryland 2009
event. Maryland DNR approved.
Mount Aventine is located inside Chapman State Park along the
Potomac River. It includes an historic colonial tidewater home
which was built in 1840. There are unobstructed views of the river,
nesting bald eagles which soar over the hillside, and massive old
oak trees along the trail.
Chapman Forest and Mount Aventine were rescued from development in
1998 by the non-profit Conservation Fund and State of Maryland
purchase of the land. The park includes 2.5 miles of Potomac River
shoreline, more species of oak trees than Smoky Mountain National
Park, numerous bald eagle nests and a rich biodiversity that is
unique to an unfragmented tract of land this size.
In 2004, Sierra Club Magazine called Chapman Forest one of 10
places in the United States that “will stir your soul” and a place
“you just gotta see.”
