This cache continues our introduction of Pioneer Cemeteries along the West side of Lake Simcoe. Lots of history to be found at these sites. This site is unique in that it commemorates a single individual pioneer Jane (Young) Gibbins and was established 1836.
David Gibbons and family emigrated from Ireland 1836 and pioneered a farm in this vicinity. Husband David walked from the village of Markam to the growing Innisfil area to locate land and bring back four samples of soil, tied in a cloth, for wife Jane to choose from and decide which land to farm. David, a carpenter, built a shelter close by to this location and the family moved here mostly by ox trail.
A few miles from their final location night fell and the cattle would go no further.Jane tined the calf to a sapling with her scarf to keep the cow nearby. She sent the children ahead with David. She kept their two dogs with her to frighten off bears and spent the cold night in the forest. The next day she arrived at the shelter. After preparing food for the family she lay down and died there of exhaustion and exposure (hypothermia?). Being there was no local cemetery, David lay her to rest right here in the SE corner of their chosen land.
The cache container is a nano and holds only a tiny log book so bring your own writing instrument and take care on replacing log in container. Watch out for muggles, re hide container as best as you can without being observed.
