Located at historic Lake Dockery in the Chattahochee Natl
Forest..about 1 mile down USFS Good Road. Co-ords are for the
Parking Area and TrailHead..Go down the Dockery Lake Trail (Goes to
AT ) about 58 paces..Stop and Look to the East..go about 20
paces..you should be in a group of yellow pine and black locust
trees..FS has cut several trees down because of beetle
infestation....Look for a recent cut pine..stump is about 12-14
inches across...looks like it's been recently cut down..grey duct
wrapped plastic bottle has a red plastic screw top. Covered with
pieces fo bark..right base of stump...You should only be about 50
feet off trail....family friendly with lots of goodies for young
and young at heart..
If you wish a challenging hike try the Woody Gap Historic Fire
Tower at Woody Gap ontop of Black Mountain at 3600 feet. We orginal
wanted to place this cache on the old trail to Firetower but there
was a conflict with an existing cache on Black Mountain Trail.
Interesting hike for the hardy and trail savy hiker..Go North on
GA60 from Dockery Lake to Woody Gap AT Trail Crossing/Parking Lot.
Park in East Lot where AT exits from left..look to right at old CCC
Concrete Picknic Tables..between the third and fourth picnic table
you will see the outline of the old FireTower Trail as built by the
CCC in the 1930's..follow the trail to N then it switches back to
S/SE..someone has flagged it..look for the old landline telephone
poles still visible (the route goes staight west and up ..tough
bushwhacking this way)...the old trail,is easier...the final switch
back on trail will take you North to intersect with the FS Road
that services the Tower..FireTower is still used for Communication
,,so no access to tower..Both the FS Road and Firetower are shown
on current FS Chattahochee Map which is/was available online..We
like the old trail route because it avoids traffic on portion of
Hwy 60 if you take FS Road only..
Additional Caches at Chestatee Outlook and Woody Gap.
Small note: As required by the USFS for caches
hidden in the Chattahoochee National Forest the cache is
prominently labeled as a geocache and the label includes the
GC1NGP5 waypoint number and the owner's e-mail address.
Enjoy!
