Geocache Description:

THIS CACHE IS AT THE POSTED COORDINATES.

There are however special logging requirements to claim the find for this series of caches (see below)

Bench Mark Hunting

If you have not had the pleasure of finding a Bench Mark , this cache is your opportunity. I find bench marks as fun and enjoyable as geocaches, and in some ways even more fascinating. When I find a bench mark I often find myself wondering about the facts around how and when the bench mark was placed. Some bench marks were placed as long ago as the 1800’s. That is a heck of a lot older than the first geocache!! I imagine a guy on horseback riding through rough territory for months on end, with another horse or mule in tow, loaded up with the supplies needed to stamp the bench mark on site and then to set it in the earth. What was life like for this lonely traveler? Did any of them die doing this thankless job? What did he do for fun while on his business trip?

I decided to begin placing caches at or near bench marks (where possible) as a way to introduce others to bench marks, and to bring the bench marks to the cachers. You will find the bench mark close by the cache location. In some cases it will be right next to the cache location, but in others you may need to search a bit. The difficulty rating will be based on how difficult the bench mark is to find from the cache location. I may include coordinates for the bench mark, or I may include the original coords that I had when I found the bench mark, I will let you know the general proximity to the cache location below, as this will vary from cache to cache that I place.

If you would like to find out more about bench marks, geocaching.com has done a great job of giving an introduction to it on their site, which you can find by clicking here……Benchmark Hunting

I decided to make this series of caches in an effort to encourage not only the finding of bench marks, but also the logging and documenting of them.

So here are the requirements for logging this cache:

*      Find the cache & sign the log

*      (Optional) Locate the nearby bench mark using any additional information given below (there may be none)

*      (Optional) Clean the bench mark so that all markings are visible

*      (Optional) Document the bench mark (write down the name and date stamped into the bench mark, as well as the coordinates of where you found the bench mark)

*      (Optional) Take pictures of the bench mark, surrounding area, or of yourself and/or your GPS at the bench mark

*

*      (Optional) Email me the bench mark name and date stamped in the bench mark

*      (Optional) Log the bench mark as found at geocaching.com “JO0593”. Make sure to include the coords you recorded for where the benchmark was located in your log, as well as any other helpful information to those who might wish to find this bench mark in the future. (Logging a bench mark is a little different than a cache, especially when dealing with a “Destroyed” bench mark. See here for more info) You are done

*      (Optional) Upload any pics you took to your bench mark log

*      Of course if you were unable to find the actual cache, log a DNF. Or if it needs maintenance let me know in a log)

Additional information for finding this particular bench mark:

The bench mark is at the top of a small hill in a rock.
