Geocache Description:

This is a favorite area for residents of Ft. Collins. It is a great hike to a local landmark. The hike is about 2 miles one way, with an elevation gain of over 1000', there is a fee to enter the area.

This large granite out cropping is the inspiration for several legends in the area. It is made up of granite pegmatite which is an igneous rock resistent to erosion. Pegmatite is a very course grained rock composed mainly of quartz (clear white), feldspar (pink) and mica (shiny like glass). Some pegmatite in Larimer County contain valuable and rare minerals such as beryl, garnet and uranium. An igneous rock is rock that has been slowly cooled from its state as melted rock called magma. -Thanks to the Larimer County Parks for help with this geological description.
