The Laughery Creek Bridge is the sole-surviving triple whipple (triple intersection) bridge in the nation. The bridge built in 1878 spans Laughery Creek (302 feet) connecting Ohio and Dearborn counties. Up until 1869 a ferry provided access between the counties for people on the much, traveled road between Aurora and Rising Sun. The county commissioners of both counties felt a bridge should replace the ferry. A timber bridge cost the two counties $41,000 and lasted less than ten years before collapsing into the creek. At a cost of $17,458 the Wrought Iron Bridge Company of Canton, Ohio, constructed the bridge that served for over 50 years. The company was proud of this bridge that it appeared prominently in the firm's ads for the balance of the century.
