Geocache Description:

Background

This cache is placed to celebrate my 3rd caching birthday. Most local cachers will by now probably have worked out that I like cycling. I do a fair amount of my caching by bike. Indeed, (at the date of publication) 11 of my 18 FTFs have been done by bike! So this cache celebrates my two great hobbies: cycling and caching.

About the cache

In 2008, Solihull MBC opened a new cycling track in Tudor Grange Park. The track was the brainchild of local cyclist and Olympic silver medal winner, Harry Reynolds, who later rode the Tour de France. His vision was to create a traffic free, safe environment where the next generation of cycling champions could be developed under the guidance of fully qualified British Cycling coaches. Hence the cache name!

The track is free for public use at any time except when it is being used for formal training / coaching sessions (mainly by Solihull Cycling Club). So why not get yourself along there and go for a spin!

Parking is available at N52 24.493 W001 47.154 or at N52 24.513 W001 47.054.

The puzzle

Finding the cache will involve some homework, some fieldwork, some maths (you may need a calculator).

The cache is hidden at N 52° 24.XXX W 001° 47.YYY

The value of XXX is worked out as follows (n.b. the asterisk denotes that this part of the solution must be rounded down to the nearest whole number):

(A / B) + (C x D) - E

The value of YYY is worked out as follows:

(F / G)* - ((B x D) x E)

The values of A – G are derived as follows:

A = the year in which Harry rode in the Tour de France
B = the number of times the word "area" appears on the map
C = the number of direction of travel arrows on the map
D = the number of "shoulds" for cyclists
E = the number of "shoulds" for pedestrians
F = the value of the grant secured by Harry to fund the construction of the track
G = the year Harry won an Olympic silver medal

A and G are your “homework”. The other values all appear on the notice board at the listing co-ordinates.

The cache itself

The final location is very close by and wheelchair accessible but a companion will need to retrieve the cache. Curiously, the cache can move a short distance between two spots. Subtract value E from your answer to YYY to get an alternative location.

When replacing the cache, please do not push it in as this will make it hard for the next visitor to retrieve. No spoilers please!!
