CJCC: Foxtrot Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

bernsa: It’s been a very long run for this geocache, and this one was one of my favorites. However, I think it’s time to let this one go. The series has long been discontinued, the final archived in controversy, and other caches in the series quietly fading over time. Shockingly, it never got a FP while it was active.

The first stage was a custom-made container constructed of LEGO parts, my first attempt at making such a container. It wasn’t particularly well hidden, but was about a hundred feet off the well-traveled Claypit Run trail, about 500 feet from the junction with the Valley View trail. In winter, it could easily be spotted by an eagle-eyed person from the trail. I’m surprised it lasted nearly 8 years, I’d always figure Stage 1 would fall into muggle hands. I had a backup constructed but am not opting to use it now. I don’t get to come up to NJ as often as I used to. I moved to Virginia only a few months after it published, and had no idea I’d be moving when I did place this cache. In recent years, I could only check on it about once a year.

The second stage I tried to build some ambiguity as to how to access it from the Fox Hollow trail. In truth, I found it didn’t matter how you got to it, I tried to make it just as accessible from either direction from Valley View. I often did my maintenance runs from the Locust Point trailhead, did the loop north on ValleyView, then connecting the Fox Hollow back to the end of Valley View. What did disappoint me were people who’d shortcut between Valley View and Fox hollow a few hundred feet from the cache. I wish I had put it further out on Fox Hollow. The 2nd stage always had a deer trail I preferred to use to access the final coordinates. The stump it was hidden under decayed significantly in the first few years, but it always held up. When I retrieved the cache on February 25, I was pleasantly surprised it was still ready to be found. Over the years, it sure got muddied but the contents held up quite well. The final stage has been removed and two photos are shown with it at the Locus Point trailhead.

By archiving, I’m happily making available some nice areas for future cache placements, and hope other cachers can find new areas in the park to explore. This last hike to retrieve the cache was very reminiscent for me. When I placed, this I’d only been caching for just under a year, and didn’t have a lot of experience under my belt. My caching style has changed a lot since I placed it. However, taking the hike for this cache one last time (in the same season no less), It reminded me why I placed this cache here in the first place. I felt satisfied. The cache has served its purpose.

Sorry to my old friend Blitznmore who attempted this on February 14. Mugglings are such as they are unfortunately.

First Stage: N 40° 23.279' W 074° 01.627'
Second Stage: N 40° 23.400 W 074° 01.906 (coordinates are now publicly viewable)

Thanks for visiting!

CJCC: Foxtrot (GC1NJ4F) was active from April 10, 2009 to February 25, 2017 (7 years, 10 months, and 15 days).

In that time there were 128 finds, 1 DNF (sorry Blitz ), and 52 TBs that traveled through the cache. It had 0 Favorite Points at the time it was archived. (aww nuts!)

Congratulations to chinster for the FTF!
Honorable mention to Caver Bill for STF and Twisted Lemons for TTF.
(Wow all three names bring back memories!)

Geocache Description:

Central Jersey Checkpoint Challenge
Central Jersey Checkpoint Challenge
Checkpoint FOXTROT

Welcome to Huber Woods in Middletown Township. This cache will fulfill your “FOXTROT” requirement for the Central Jersey Checkpoint Challenge.

Hidden on March 27, 2009, this cache is a two-stage LEGOcache. Expect to walk 2 miles, but your actual distance may vary depending on your choice of parking and trails. I encourage you to Foxtrot as you run your way towards the fox, taking a view along the way.

Huber Woods Park in Middletown Township is operated by the Monmouth County Parks System and preserves the Huber Farm and Homestead. The park features 8 miles (and growing) of trails which meander through woods and meadows. The park website contains information regarding the park including its history and directions. It would be a good idea to grab a trail map or print one out before heading out. Park hours vary seasonally, but generally are dawn to dusk. Parking by the environmental center may have more exclusive hours. The trails you will need to traverse for this cache are rated as follows by the Monmouth County Park System:

  • E = Easy Trails (Green Circle). Well-maintained or paved; intended for walking or running.
  • M = Moderate Trails (Blue Square). Longer with some grades/obstructions, intended for hiking and equestrians (may be suitable for some walkers and runners).
Bicycles are not permitted on the trails in Huber Woods.

The first stage coordinates were averaged over several trips to the park, but I'm going to say they are only within 20ft. accuracy. Stage 1 is a LEGOcache. You're looking for a container made out of LEGO parts. The entire container is measured as 4 x 9 x 3 1/3 according to standard LEGO dimensions and should be easy to spot when you're at GZ. It will resemble a "Traditional" Geocache icon (). The coordinates to stage two should be viewable without the need to take Stage 1 apart - Please resist the urge to take apart the cache container. Also take care to keep the cache container hidden from view from muggles who may be walking the trail. Stage 1 is located about 100 feet off the trail and requires light bushwhacking.

Stage 2 is a standard Lock n Lock container. Some moderate bushwhacking is required for the last 75 feet. Choose your trail carefully. LEGO checkpoint flags are available for Swag Trades, but FTF may feel free to take one without trading.

As part of the Central Jersey Checkpoint series - please note the following additional requirements for those seeking the series geocoins:

  • In order to claim 1 of the additional 26 CeNeJeGeCa coins that will be available you MUST include a picture of your signature from EACH of the 26 checkpoint log books in your log on the Central Jersey Checkpoint Challenge cache.
The above requirement is not necessary to log or claim FTF for THIS cache

Official CJCC Information
Central Jersey Geocachers are sponsoring the Central Jersey Checkpoint Challenge series. This challenge series is intended to take geocachers on a tour of Central New Jersey (loosely defined as north of 195 and south of 78) while finding caches placed by Central Jersey geocachers. On the tour we hope you will find Central Jersey an interesting and beautiful part of our great state.

This challenge series includes 26 checkpoint caches (naming based on the NATO phonetic alphabet) and the final - Central Jersey Checkpoint Challenge (GC1NJAZ). The 26 checkpoints do not have to be completed in any particular order. See the CJCheckpoint bookmark for the complete list of caches.

Hidden within the 26 checkpoint caches are numbers to be used to calculate the coordinates of the final Central Jersey Checkpoint Challenge cache – please be sure to note them while you are there.

While there are no special logging requirements for the 26 checkpoint caches, there are special logging requirements for the Central Jersey Checkpoint Challenge cache. Complete information can be found on the Central Jersey Checkpoint Challenge cache page. In order to claim 1 of the 26 CeNeJeGeCa coins that will be available you MUST include a picture of your signature from EACH of the 26 checkpoint log books in your log on the Central Jersey Checkpoint Challenge cache.

Happy caching and enjoy the Central Jersey Checkpoint Challenge!!!
