A while ago, my good friend William Legrand got bitten by a
nasty bug, which he believed to be made of solid gold! Ever since
he has been acting strange.
Yesterday, William, together with his servant Jupiter, stopped
by my house and tried to convince me to go on a adventurous
expedition with them to a far away island. I naturally wanted to do
no such thing, but he insisted. He told me that through a
mysterious series of events, he had come in the possession of a
strange-looking letter, full of remarkable symbols:
6+#8/£%5#?§§#5/#+6~3§/£%+2*%323§/£%8#37%9
5#3/~3=%#3/£%%2@/+#2§6#+@%*%3£=3§+%§@/%&@
6+#8/£%@~÷3#6/£%?282÷#@~1/9/^#8%/+%@
!%2+~3÷/^#£=3§+%§6#+/9@%*%3§%÷+%%@
I told him I could not make heads or tails of it, but he did not
listen. He kept talking about a pirate called Captain Kidd, and a
pirate treasure, worth 14 million dollars! This understandably
peeked my interest...
Background
This cache is inspired by the story The Gold-Bug
written by Edgar Allan Poe
(the full
text of the story is electronically available!). Poe was an
amateur cryptologist and popularized the use and cracking of
cryptograms partly through a series of articles in which he
challenged his readers to send him encrypted letters, and mostly
through this story.
Since this cache is a pirate's treasure, each
finder is kindly asked to only trade with items that would fit in
such a treasure, such as gold, silver, jewelry, coins, precious
stones, etc.
(tyvärr går denna mysterycache bara att lösa om
man kan engelska)
