AT Ontario's northeastern end can be found one of the top natural attractions of the Great Lakes. The Thousand Islands Region at the entrance of the St. Lawrence River features natural beauty, historical significance and genuine challenge for mariners exploring its secret ways. Beyond lies the 750-mile St. Lawrence River, making the final boundary of the Great Lakes as it flows into the Atlantic at the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Thousand Islands were formed by Fire, Water, and Ice. Fire: Heat and pressure of the precambrian gneiss rocks are roots of an ancient mountain system. They were formed by heat, pressure and intrusive action during the period of mountain building. Water: The overlaying sandstone and limestone/dolostone layers are sedimentary rocks formed from deposits in the Potsdam Sea. Ice: Glaciers, advancing from the north, modified the landscape, gouging valleys and scouring hills, plucking rocks from the upstream side of the islands. The islands themselves are elongated parallel to the river and display similar rounded form with pronounced asymetry of cliffy, upstream ends and gentle, downstream trailing slopes. This indicates that glacial advance during the Ice Age was upvalley, more-or-less parallel to the river. Other interesting aspects to this scenic view, a historic War of 1812 Campaign took place here, we can see a historic Castle and Canada. To log this Earthcache as a find email a photo of you with The Castle in the background. What is the Name of the Castle and the Island it is on? How many Islands can you see from this observation point? What is the name of the War of 1812 Campaign that took place here? What is the ancient mountain mentioned above?
