Geocache Description:

Standard small lock and lock, suitable for small swaps.

The infamous Dr Beeching had a lot to answer for...... His Government sponsored report closed numerous railway lines and stations up and down the country that were, at that time in the 1960's, the essential lifeblood for those areas as they relied on the rural railway network for personal transport to and from their workplaces as well as a means of getting their source of income - fish, game or crops - to and from market.

Anstruther, obviously, was the place where fish from the various East Neuk fishing ports of Enster, Sint Minnance Craal and P'weem were transported to Cupar for subsequent loading onto the East Coast main line and thence to destinations up and down the country.

The passenger station was later relocated further towards the town whilst the original station became the goods yard. If you look further to the south you will see a rail bridge marooned in the middle of a field with another one or two similar bridges further south. One such bridge is known locally as the waterless bridge and is near the junction of the Anstruther/St Monans/Colinsburgh road.

Perhaps the closure of the line was as a result in the decline of the local fishing industry - or did the closure of the line cause said decline??

Still get a good fish supper on the seafront though!!

Placed for the Langspoon 2009 and thus not loggable until the event. ta....
