Geocache Description:

Great look out over the Jezre'el Valley at the site of the ancient 2000 yr old Beit She'arim

Beit Sha'arim is a National Park famous for its large burial caves from 2000 years ago. The famous Rabbi Yehuda Ha'nasi - who wrote down the Mishna - which until this time was the oral law passed down from generation to generation - was buried here.

The Rabbi was so famous worldwide that Jews from all over the world wanted to be buried by him. There are caves full of sarcophagi some with inscriptions and intricate carvings.

One can also see the eeriness of the work of the grave robbers. These are the graves of the rich and they took to their graves jewels and gold. As a result every sarcophagus has been broken into and you can see the holes.

The park is well worth a visit. You can normally ask for a tour with a guide and hear the explanations of the different types of burials (first and second) and why they believe they discovered Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi's grave.

Check the park's site for opening times and fees. (visit link)

The cache is hidden outside the park on the hill overlooking the lush Jezre'el Valley. You can see probably the only European type statue in Israel - of the guard on his horse. This guard is Alexander Zeid from the "Hashomer Gaurds" who was killed while guarding the Jewish lands in this area.

Alexander Zeid built his home here on top of ancient Beit Shearim and while building his home discovered what looked like stones from an ancient settlement. He sent a letter to the archeology department with description and drawings. 2 years later an excavation was made and the burial caves were found.

Alexander Zeid's family still lives on top of the hill.

Cache is in a round plastic container in a plastic bag.
Please take care return it to its place. Depending on the season there may not be foliage to help camouflage the cache.
