Geocache Description:

The effects of the recent drought have been severe and far-reaching, but it's not until driving through this spot recently that we realised how bad it has really become.

On one side of the road approaching GZ, you will see Lake Gnarpurt. On the other, you will see Lake Corangamite, largest lake in Victoria. At the time of publishing, Gnarpurt is totally dry and Corangamite is almost there...

Strong winds regularly whip across the dry surfaces of the lakes and scatter the silty, salty dust across the neighbouring lands so that it now resembles a nuclear fallout zone, or a lunar landscape.

The 'dust' is now so thick and deep that it will probably take many years for this land to become usable again, if it ever does. Very sad to see, considering this used to be a very scenic and unique spot to drive past.

This cache consists of a small Sistema container and is intended as a quick drive-by, therefore, you can park safely along the side of the road; however, beware in wet weather! As the o'cholio duo found out firsthand while placing the cache, it's VERY easy to get bogged in the wet silt if you're not careful! :-P Terrain in this spot can vary from 1 to 3 stars depending on timing, so we've averaged it out.

Keep an eye on geokids and/or pets when searching; although it's a long, straight road, it gets used quite often and can get relatively busy at times.

During periods of high wind activity, the resulting duststorms can be dangerous and may cause a road closure if they're bad enough, so if you arrive at the road to find it's been closed, remember it's for a good reason!

Have fun finding the cache - and reflect on what this area once may have been...
