Treknschmidt: Thanks Norshley for the update. We had planned to free up the spot so we popped out today and picked up both containers.

Bannister Lake Conservation area is a natural heritage area consisting of large shallow ponds in gently rolling, low moraine. Located five miles to the southwest of Galt are two of the largest, shallow, intermittent ponds in the county - Bannister and Wrigley Lakes. They are owned by the Grand River Conservation Authority and are managed as a baited wildlife area specifically to serve breeding and migrating avifauna. There is great fluctuation in their seasonal water level, the water being supplied only by spring runoff and temporarily held in these shallow basins by the mucky bottom loam but drained by mid-summer due to the stratified layers of gravel underlying the topsoil and a slow stream draining to the west. Almost all of this area is immersed in spring but due to the drop in water level only a few smaller bodies of shallow water remain by fall. The effect of this gradual and belated immersion is evident in most of the vegetation associations in the area. The bodies of water that remain in the fall are about 4 feet at their deepest and have a semi-closed cover of lily pads, duckweeds, and rushes that provide both food and cover for muskrats, ducks and other pond life. Currently the area is comprised of walking trails through mixed forest, wetland and grassland. This area is frequented by bird watchers and has been known for observing migrating land birds. Observers have reported seeing everything from woodpeckers and chickadees to kingfishers and a trumpeter swan. While we were placing the cache we spotted a rather large hawk. Bring your camera and please post pictures of what you find!
