Boxted's 1st Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The PBs: I tried looking for a new spot over christmas but the heavy snow meant I couldn't be sure that it would be hidden very well. I'll archive the listing for this geocache- and look for some good spots in the future. There are now some other Boxted cache's so please try these!

Geocache Description:

A fairly easy cache located in an orchard by a pond.

This cache has been placed in a beautiful and unspoilt location on a public footpath that runs through a privately managed walnut orchard (one of the very few walnut orchards in the country). We have seen deer, hares, a kingfisher and of course plenty of rabbits, squirrels and other birds in the orchard and by the lake. It is a popular spot for dog walkers and fishing so watch out for those muggles!

You can approach the cache from a couple of different directions. The shorter route is to park in a small layby that can be found after the first set of houses on Wet Lane. Alternatively you might want to park next to Saint Peter’s Church (off of Church Road) and walk to the public footpath that runs alongside the field next to Pond House. If you are lucky you might come across the Alpaca that are kept in this field at certain times of the year; they are quite shy though!

The church itself is well worth a visit as it dates from about the late 11th century, has a Norman tower and stained glass windows. Also see if you can spot the grave with the skull and crossed ladle and torch. In Douglas Carter’s history of Boxted he suggests this might be because the grave belonged to a “rather dubious character...signifying the old adage ‘He who sups with the Devil needs a long spoon”!

The route from the church will take you near the ‘Essex Way’ which is a long-distance path that takes a route across the county. However before getting onto the public footpaths you will need to walk along a country road that does not have any pavements so please look out for passing vehicles.

We hope you enjoy the cache and the tranquillity of the lake and orchard.
