Geocache Description:

This is a series we’ve named “SPIRIT RUN” to help geocachers (both tourists and locals) further enjoy their trip along Spirit Lake Memorial Highway to our beautiful Mount St. Helens … and along the way to “RUN UP (your) NUMBERS” of geocaches you’ve found. A recent look at the geocache map showed a sad lack of caches along this scenic highway … and we decided we needed to change that!
For the most part, the geocaches are quick ”grab-sign-and-be- on- your- way” finds. But we’ve also tried to provide some variety with ammo cans, micros, magnetics, Tupperwares and a couple of “head-scratchers” to add a little bit of challenge. All of the geocaches are easily accessed from Spirit Lake Memorial Highway, all provide safe parking and only one necessitates keeping a close eye on the kiddos.
We hope you enjoy the caches … and be watching for more in the near future.

The Toutle River Sediment Retention Structure does just what the name suggests -- it traps gravel and sand that has washed down the Toutle River valley.
The Army Corps of Engineers built the 184-foot-high SRS in 1987. The $66 million structure is 1,800 feet long
It's a 300-foot walk to a viewpoint of the SRS (and location of the cache). Elk are often visible in the grassy areas below it.

If the trail is dry in the summer,we think that wheelchairs can make it, although maybe a little bumpy and a little steep to get to the viewpoint.

Optional: The mile-long path to the dam goes through woods, over a wetlands area, past a meadow frequented by elk and onto the top of the structure. Because the dam's almost as tall as a 20-story building, it's breathtaking to peer over the downstream edge.
