Some background information.
Lochiel Park has a number of interesting features to look at.
As you tour the area you will come across a very large dead gum tree. I like to think I may have played a part in the tree still being there. The original plans had the tree slated for demolition. In a submission to the development process, I put forward that there many creatures using the tree, and it should be retained along with the significant live trees. The tree is still there, billed on the LMC website as ‘The Tree of Life’.
The site originally was the home of the School of Horticulture plus a training set up for the Metropolitan Fire Service, had a sports oval, and accommodation for Trees for Life. All of these organisations were moved out, and the LMC, (Land Management Corporation), produced a plan for a huge number of houses to be built on small blocks, i.e., a blatant money grabbing exercise. This led to vociferous protests by a local residents group.
During an election campaign, the then Leader of the opposition stated that they would save all of the area from housing development. Well, the opposition won, and there was a long worrying silence from the new Govt., with a few ambiguous statements thrown in from time to time. Eventually, with much fanfare, the plans for the current development, with about 70% open space, were released, i.e. all means 100% of 70%.
Anyway, we must be thankful for small mercies, and it is an interesting development, with eco style housing, (you can judge the houses for yourselves), and wetlands, with water sourced from a large storm water drain. The plan is to pump excess water into an underground aquifer.
