Caldwell Woods - named in honor of Billy Caldwell, Potawatomi chief, son of an Indian mother and a British Army captain, remembered for his valuable services in assisting treaty negotiations between Indian tribes and the U.S. government. The woods are in the North Branch Division of the Cook County Forest Preserve District, bounded by Caldwell Avenue, Devon Avenue, Milwaukee Avenue, and Harms Road.
This stretch of Caldwell Woods is a popular location for local residents out on their daily exercise routines. Many people walking, rollerblading, taking the kids out, etc. take place along this first mile stretch of the North Branch Trail. The entire path is newly paved as of late 2007/2008 and is in great shape. It’s also a good spot for dog walking, which I do here often as it is within walking distance from me.
This cache is a good one for families and children. Not TOO hard to find, but camouflaged and a good way to show kids a traditional geocache. I’ve stocked it with a few goodies including 2 GeoJewelry bracelets, a spotted frog, a light-up spinner top toy, a lion keychain, and a mini Rubik’s Cube.
Had a tough time locking in the coordinates, so please let me know if there are problems. It’s a very traditional hide so even if the coords are a bit off, the find can be made. You are looking for a 2-cup sized twist and lock container.
Plan on seeing deer, lots of deer. While walking this stretch it is not uncommon for me to see over a dozen deer, sometimes more. And they don't spook too easy so it is a great opportunity to get some nice photographs.
Parking is best done at the Bunker Hill entrance on Caldwell Avenue at these coordinates…
N 42.00.226 W 087.46.899
From there it is a walk of a little over ½ mile. A slightly closer approach would be to find street parking closer to Devon and Caldwell, but not as friendly traversing the crowded streets.
This is in a Cook County forest preserve which is open from sunrise to sunset and times are strictly enforced.
