Geocache Description:

Fourth in the Sunday Stroll series aroud Halfpenny via quiet byways.

This next cache is under the canopy of a crab apple tree and the ground was littered with fruit when this trail was laid in March.
Continue up the path to the stile back out onto open country and the curious map mark “syphon well” turns out to be a substantial stone built affair in the red sandstone which generally marks out Thirlmere / Haweswater aqueduct & Manchester corporation involvement. The sounds of moving water rise from the gratings surrounding the building. Nearly 50 million gallons of Lake District water daily is capable of being carried under only the power of gravity down to those poor city dwellers.

If you have deviated to explore the well, turn round and head back uphill following the edge of the wood but don’t go back into the wood through the stile. At the crest of the hill there is another stile and the next waypoint on the route is revealed in the vale ahead, Cockrigg farm nestling in a fold in the landscape.
